If you are looking for an easy way to haul your expensive gear, slap this premium Yakima sport trailer on your hitch and you're ready to Rack and Roll.

Rear view of Yakima Rack and Roll trailer with 66" crossbars

This high-performance, lightweight Rack and Roll trailer comes with a pair of adjustable, 66" Yakima crossbars for mounting boats, bikes and cargo boxes for covered storage - whatever you need. The round crossbars slide along tracks to adjust to your load, and they accept all Yakima roof-rack accessories - it's like having a tow-behind roof rack with all the capability and versatility of a standard Yakima rack. The difference here is that, with the trailer's conveniently low loading height, you don't have to lift your gear over your head to store it.

Rack and Roll adjustable shock absorbers
Rack and Roll holds up to 250 lbs and coddles your gear with fully independent, adjustable shock absorbers. The suspension has 4 inches of wheel travel for exceptional highway performance, cushioning your gear and keeping the trailer from going "airborne" over rough terrain.

Rack and Roll trailer stowed uprightRack and Roll rear rollersThe versatile trailer is easy to store when not in use, with a variety of options for keeping it tucked away in your garage. The tongue and wheels remove easily with stainless steel pins to make the trailer more compact. The trailer can be stored upright or hung on the garage wall by the crossbars. The rear section of the frame features two integrated rollers to make moving the trailer laterally effortless.

Standard 4-way light connector for Rack and Roll trailerA standard, 4-way flat, black rubber connector is included for connecting your lights to the towing vehicle. The trailer connector has three male pins and one female pin. The vehicle's flat-4 connector should have one male pin (exposed ground) and three female connections (live circuits for stop, turn and running lights).

Rack and Roll trailer locking lever
The trailer frame includes a locking lever with a Same Key System Core that locks your hitch tongue to the trailer frame. SKS Cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima locks keyed alike.

Rack and Roll carrying handle

An integrated carrying handle is mounted near the coupler to make it easier to place the trailer on the hitch ball. The handle also turns your trailer into a handcart that is easy to maneuver while it's unhitched from your vehicle.

The trailer can carry one boat up to 17' long or two 16'-long boats. Add the Rack and Roll Tongue Extension Kit (Y08109) - sold separately - to increase the capacity to one 22'-long boat or two 21'-long boats.

You can also store the trailer without removing the tongue and wheels by adding the Rack and Roll Kickstand (Y08115) - sold separately.

The trailer is constructed from anodized aluminum and features custom-cast, polished aluminum alloy wheels.

The trailer works with Class I, II and III hitches with a 1-7/8" ball installed. The ball should be mounted 22" from the ground for optimum performance. To ensure the best fit, use a ball mount with the proper drop or rise to modify the height of your receiver.

Most states require that you register your Rack and Roll trailer. All paperwork necessary for registering your trailer is included. Take the documents to your Department of Motor Vehicles and you will be issued a license plate.

8008106 Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer - 66"

THE REASON THEY STRESS THE BALL HEIGHT IS THAT IF YOU PULL IT TO LOW, IT INCREASE THE TONGUE AND LOAD WEIGHT THAT MAY BE MORE THAN YOUR CAR CAN HANDLE. IF YOU PULL IT TO HIGH IT WILL SWING THE TRAILER BACK AND FORTH ACROSS THE HIGHWAY BEHIND YOU.

NOTICE THE FLAG ON THE RED KAYAK, LEGAL FOR DAY, BUT NOT FOR NIGHT.

ON THE BOTTOM LEFT TRAILER THE KAYAKS STICK OUT MORE THAN 3 FEET. IT LOOKS LIKE 6 FT.

THE CITY AND STATE DEPARTMENTS NEED MORE REVENUE FROM FINES AND THE POLICE HAVE CRACKED DOWN. MORE TICKETS FOR OVER LENGTH LOAD WERE WRITTEN THE PAST YEAR THAN IN THE LAST10 YEARS COMBINED. A IN THE CITY TICKET WITH COURT COST WILL USUALLY COST YOU $300.00 TO $500.00 FINE.  ON THE HIGHWAY THE TICKET WILL COST YOU FROM $1000.00 TO $3000.00. THE HIGHWAY PATROL WILL USUALLY NOT LET YOU CONTINUE AND YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL A TOW TRUCK TO COME TAKE YOUR LOAD OFF THE HIGHWAY. TRY AND GET YOUR AAA OR INSURANCE TO PAY THE TOW BILL, HA! HA! WHEN YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY CANCELS YOUR POLICY BECAUSE YOU GOT A TICKET FOR ILLEGAL FENDERS BECAUSE YOUR TIRE THRU A ROCK BEHIND YOU AND BROKE A WINDSHIELD ON THE CAR FOLLOWING YOU, YOU GET ANOTHER TICKET AND SOME OFFICERS WILL NOT LET YOU CONTINUE DOWN THE ROAD AND YOU MUST CALL A TOW TRUCK AND SPEND MORE MONEY TO HAVE IT TOWED OF THE HIGHWAY.
WITH SPLASH GUARD AND ROCK GUARD FENDERS LIKE ARE SUPPLIED ON TOP OF THE LINE TRAILERS, YOU CAN TRAVEL DOWN THE ROAD WITH CONFIDENCE THAT YOU ARE LEGAL AND YOUR EQUIPMENT IS NOT GOING TO GET THE ROAD GRIME SPRAYED UP ONTO THE EQUIPMENT YOU ARE CARRYING AS THE INNER FENDER IS LINED AND YOU ARE PROTECTED.

PHOTO ALSO SHOWS THE TRAILER WITH EZ LUBE HUBS.

AS I WAS WRITING THIS I HAD A CALL OVER THE EMERGENCY 2 WAY  RADIO THAT A PERSON WAS BROKE DOWN ON THE INTERSTATE AND THE WHEEL BEARING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WAS COOKED AND HE WAS ASKING WHO COULD COME AND BRING A SNATCH TRAILER TO TAKE THE TRAILER IN FOR REPAIR AS HE HAD NO SPARE TIRE.  ON THE YAKIMA TRAILERS THE TIRE AND WHEEL AND THE SMALL BEARING ASSEMBLY ARE ALL 1 INTEGRATED PART. IT WAS A YAKIMA AND I INSTANTLY CALLED THE FACTORY AND THEY ADVISED THEY ONLY SELL COMPLETE WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLIES, $195.00 AND SHIPPING OVERNIGHT WOULD BE ABOUT $84.00. THIS IS THE PRIME REASON YOU WANT TO ALWAYS BUY A SPARE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY FOR THE YAKIMA, AS YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL NEED IT.

THE ABOVE PROBLEM WOULD NOT OF HAPPENED WITH A POSITIVE EZ LUBE HUB LUBRICATION SYSTEM THAT IS AVAILABLE ON THE TOP OF THE LINE TRAILERS. LEARN MORE BY WATCHING THE MOVIES BELOW.

REMEMBER TO INSIST ON A POSITIVE EZ LUBRICATION HUB AND BEARING SYSTEM !

Bottom Line: My friend bought this rack and it was really hard to put on compared to the Saris, The rubber latches are super hard to latch. I hated this rack even before my friends bike hit the freeway, because one of the latches failed. Please go with any brand other then this, but I do love the Saris Bones.

Duration Product Used: More than 3 years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At: Rack for Cars
Strengths: Easy to load bike onto roof rack
Weaknesses: Difficult to tighten cam grip on cross bar
Bottom Line: The rack has always been a problem from the very first day. Had to constantly check to make sure the cam grip was tight to make sure the rack was secure. As some one has mentioned with vibration they loosen up. Finally a disaster happened. Just returning from a trip in the mountains with two bikes on the rack. Checked the rack before leaving and everything was secure. After driving on a slightly bumpy highway for about 150 miles, I stopped and did a recheck of all supports. About 100 miles later in gusty winds the bike rack lifted off the car and landed in the middle of the highway. Problem, the cam grips worked themselves loose in the gusty wind. How lucky no one was immediately behind me, it would have caused a major disaster. One lucky thing was the rack landed on the highway with the bikes upright and the bikes only took some road rash but no major damage. The rack was completely destroyed. Do not buy this rack.

Bottom Line: I had the exact same experience as your user chrisharjes. Than you chrisharjes for extensive review. I wish I saw it before I bought this product. It was the same problem with the Q towers. I was driving on the highway going surfing when I lost the front bar of the rack together with my surfboard. You can imagine the horror of me running on the highway to pick up the peaces so other motorist do not get injured. I sent the rack back to  Yakima. I waited for like 12 weeks with no response. After 12 weeks I contacted them twice before they responded. Again, they said it was my fault because the racks were adjusted 1/2" too wide! If I have adjusted them that wide they would have fallen like months ago. Anyway, they offered me some money back and refused to repair my vehicle. I suggest if you decide to buy this product better make sure you get the exact measurements from Yakima for your vehicle.

Strengths: Looks cool, lots of neat little accessories
Weaknesses: Falls off cars on the interstate
Similar Products Used: Thule
Bike Setup: Trek Remedy 6
Bottom Line: I've used Yakima products to haul bikes, kayaks and couches for years and years. They've established a reputation for dependability, but have lately allowed their quality to slip substantially. I bought a full Q-tower setup for my 2008 Honda Civic early ths summer, meticulously installed it per factory directions, and used it for only six weeks before the entire system flew off my car at 70 MPH with no warning whatsoever, destroying my wife's and my surfboard. I borrowed her car the next day, also with Q-towers, and noticed the rack slipping off as I tied my new(ish) mountain bike on for a ride.
I asked around, and was amazed to hear that several friends in the southeast (eleven so far) have had the exact same thing happen with Yakima Q-towers on Hondas and other sleek, low-profile vehicles. The clips they use attempt to fit multiple car models, and do so poorly. The Q-tower locking mechanism has an inherent flaw that allows road vibration to gradually loosen its grip, resulting in catastrophic failure.
When I contacted Yakima, they lied. "Q-towers work excellently, even on Hondas- We have had very few reports of failure." They weren't happy that other folks were telling me about these common failures, and continued to deny them despite more incoming reports. Yakima asked me to send the rack in for analysis, at my expense, then refused to offer restitution for my surfboards or vehicle damage. They have even failed to refund my money for the defective product. If you choose to buy a Yakima rack, be ready to get the cold shoulder when your bikes get rag-dolled across the interstate!

Submitted by slow learner a Cross Country Rider from Colorado
Date Reviewed: September 22, 2008
Duration Product Used: More than 3 years
Strengths: Versitile! Fits both my vehicles. Carries bikes in the summer and skis in the winter.
Weaknesses: expensive!!
Similar Products Used: none
Bike Setup: Hardtail MTB
Bottom Line: Solid rack. Several parts (e.g. hinges on ski rack) corroded and I had to replace with stainless components. In fairness, my rack is 10 years old.

I have had two (I guess I'm a slow learner) encounters with my garage. The Q-Clips bent slightly some of the plastic covers broke. Additionally, the Raptor clamp broke. However, damage to my car was far more costly. The rain gutters sustained some damage, the rack feet dented my roof in 3 places, and bolts from the Yakima caused a 3 inch gouge in the paint and a 1/2 inch deep dent in my roof. I can't really fault the Yakima for my stupidity but it sure would have been nice if the rack would have seperated cleanly from my car.

CONCLUSION ! BUY A TRAILER AND YOU HAVE ELIMINATED MANY PROBLEMS AND THE POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO BOTH VEHICLE AND YOUR EQUIPMENT. LOTS OF THE PROBLEMS COME FROM CHEAP IMPORTED BOLTS AND NUTS. REMEMBER ANYTHING THAT VIBRATES REQUIRES A LOCK NUT. EITHER CRIMPED OR WITH A NYLON INSERT.

AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE CHART THAT THE SPRING AXLE HAS 4 TIMES THE VIBRATION OF A TORSION TRAILING AXLE IN THE LOWER CHART.

ROAD VIBRATION TO THE TIRE AND WHEEL AND HUB ASSEMBLY AND THE BEARINGS ARE DAMPENED EVEN MORE WHEN THE AXLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A POSITIVE EZ LUBRICATION SYSTEM. 90 OUT OF 100 DEALER WILL INDICATE TO YOU THEY CAN GET YOU THE EZ LUBE HUBS AT USUALLY ABOUT $120.00 UPGRADE,,,,  BUT 90 % OF THEM ARE NOT GIVING YOU THE  POSITIVE EZ LUBRICATION SYSTEM. AS OF THE WRITIG OF THIS THE FOLLOWING MANUFACTURES ARE ALL USING THE POSITIVE EZ LUBRICATION SYSTEM MADE IN AMERICA AND EACH HUB IS MACHINE FINISHED RIGHT HERE IN THE USA. TRAILER MANUFACTURES ARE: EZ TOW TRAILERS , YUPPIE WAGON TRAILERS, PULMOR TRAILERS, VERSA TRAILER. CALL 402-334-5908 TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING A POSITIVE EZ LUBRICATION SYSTEM.  THE ABOVE YAKIMA TRAILER HAS A SUSPENSION SYSTEM THAT ALL THE OTHER MANUFACTURES DISCONTINUED 50 YEARS AGO AND  NO RATING AS TO THE DAMPING PERIOD OF OSCILLATION IS AVAILABLE THAT I CAN FIND.
